🗣ACTION!💬

Disney’s Box Office Blues
Where’s the Fairy Dust, Mickey?

Yikes, Disney seems to be having a tough time at the box office lately… They've been ruling the roost for a decade, thanks to big-hitters like Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar, but things seem to be going a bit pear-shaped.😟 Some biggies like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” "The Little Mermaid" remake, "Elemental," and most recently "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" didn't exactly set the box office on fire this year. 🎞️💥

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" raked in $835 million, but this may be the first year Disney hasn't had at least one movie reach $1 billion since 2014 (excluding the 2020 and 2021 pandemic years, of course). 😬 However, Disney is still the big cheese in the market with 37% of the industry's revenue in 2023. 💸💼

On the downside, Disney’s huge budgets for films, often over $200 million, plus about $100 million in marketing, means they gotta make a lot of dough to break even. 💵 With China and Russia markets looking uncertain, and the global box office not being what it used to be, the risk is getting higher. 📉

Much of the major movies take a few years to develop, produce and distribute, so any cost-cutting won't show until 2026 or later. ⏱️ A good chunk of the skyrocketing budgets for this year's flicks can be chalked up to factors such as delays due to the pandemic and the costs of COVID testing. The change in fortune is also due to some creative flops, and the massive focus on streaming.

Animation powerhouse Pixar is having a hard time too, with movies going directly to Disney+ during COVID. 🦠📺 On top of that, competitors are spending way less on animation and making huge profits! 😲💰 It's like David vs Goliath in the animation world.

With Disney struggling in various areas, from movie production to its theme parks, it looks like the magical kingdom needs to find its magic wand quick!🔮✨

📺💥 DIRECTV vs Nexstar: Big Tussle Takes 150 TV Stations Off-Air 🚫 Here's some drama ya need to know… DIRECTV and Nexstar Media Group are in a spat, and 150 local TV stations are off-air as a result! 😱 They couldn't agree on a new deal, so channels like WPIX in New York and KTLA in LA are gone for DIRECTV, Uverse, and DIRECTV Stream users. We're talking about around 10 million customers hit by the blackout here. 😨 DIRECTV, with 13 million subscribers, is a big fish in the pay-TV pond, but cord-cutting's been nipping at their base. Nexstar, the biggest U.S. owner of local TV stations, owns NewsNation and a big piece of the CW network. Both sides say they're negotiating in good faith, but no resolution yet… This could get messy! 🍿

Vanishing Disney+ Originals 🕵️‍♂️📺 Disney+ pulled its original movie "Crater" only 48 days after its release, without offering an official explanation. The move echoes similar actions by other platforms like Netflix and HBO Max, fueling speculation about the reasons behind these removals. The probable cause? Cost-cutting through licensing deals. For example, Netflix obtaining rights to stream HBO shows. This is new for the landscape and could potentially redefine our understanding of digital content ownership and the overall dynamics of the streaming industry. Def something to keep an eye on 👀

Alien Gears Up for 2024 Release 👽 Our beloved space horror saga is getting a fresh installment set to terrify us in August 2024. And guess what? The mighty Ridley Scott is back producing, with Fede Álvarez, the mastermind behind 'Don't Breathe,' directing! Just yesterday, Álvarez sparked a wave of excitement among fans when he posted a cool black-and-white picture of him celebrating with a cigar. 📸😎 Unfortunately, Sigourney Weaver won't be returning as our favorite space survivor, Ellen Ripley, but with a stellar cast including Isabela Merced and Cailee Spaeny, and Álvarez promising to share more content, there's plenty to look forward to! 🚀🎬

🌼 'Killers of the Flower Moon': Scorsese's Star-Studded Historical Drama is Coming! 🎬🎥 Clear your schedules, movie lovers – Martin Scorsese's latest, 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' is hitting the big screens and Apple TV+ on October 20th! 🗓️🍿 With a cast that includes heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, this historical drama is already making waves 🌊. The film, based on David Grann's book, dives deep into the shocking Osage Murders and the government's investigation 🔍. Critics at Cannes are loving it, calling it a vivid portrait of historical wrongs that resonate with today's political climate. With a run time of three and a half hours, you're in for quite the cinematic journey! 🎞️👀

🦖 Barney Like You've Never Seen Him: Daniel Kaluuya's Surrealistic Twist 🎥🔮Alright, Barney fans, brace yourselves! 📢 Daniel Kaluuya, our Oscar-winning fave, is set to star in and produce a live-action film of the classic kid's TV show, Barney 🦖🎥. But wait, there's a twist – this isn't just a fun, nostalgia-filled ride. Nope, we're talking millennial angst and an "A24-type", surreal story. 🤔💭 Sounds like Barney's about to get real! Something tells me, we're in for quite a cinematic ride. 🎬🍿

🎥 'Barbie' Gets the Boot in Vietnam Over Map Controversy 🚫 Get this, folks – Vietnam's pulled the plug on 'Barbie'! 🙅‍♀️ Yeah, you heard right. Warner Bros.' film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling isn't gonna see the light of day there, all because of a controversial map known as the "nine-dash line" 🗺️. This line shows China's territorial claims over the South China Sea, something Vietnam ain't happy about. They've been axing films with this line for a while, like "Abominable" and "Uncharted", and even got Netflix to pull the Aussie spy drama "Pine Gap" last year. Seems like the South China Sea's causing waves in more ways than one! 🌊

🎬 'Les Indésirables': Ladj Ly's Riveting Tale of Urban Struggle and Hope 🏙️Hot off his Oscar-nominated hit "Les Misérables", Ladj Ly is back with "Les Indésirables" and it's making a splash at the Toronto International Film Festival! 🎥🏆 Starring a killer ensemble, it's all about a young doctor trying to step into the mayor's shoes after a sudden death in suburban Paris, and a determined local woman fighting for her neighborhood 👊. According to the Toronto Fest CEO, it's a story that really gets you – packed with struggles and dreams, and showcasing Ly's storytelling prowess 🎬👌👀

📺 Peaky Blinders Creators Tell Ron DeSantis: Back Off Our Show! 🎬🚫 Never thought we'd see a tiff between Florida governor Ron DeSantis and the Netflix hit series Peaky Blinders, did ya? But here we are! DeSantis cooked up a campaign ad using footage from popular movies and shows, including our beloved Peaky Blinders. Yup, that's right, shots of Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby are sandwiched between Trump speeches and headlines criticizing his policies. The Peaky Blinders crew were none too pleased, declaring they didn't give permission for the footage to be used and, more importantly, they don't stand by the message of the ad.

⚡📺 Daniel Radcliffe Hands Over the Wand: New 'Harry Potter' Series Coming 2025/2026! Harry Potter fans, get ready… 🎢 A new Harry Potter series is coming to MAX, and guess what—Daniel Radcliffe's NOT in it. 😱 The show's planned to run for 10 years… yup, you read that right: 10 years. We’ll be getting a whole new cast, but we're likely looking at a premiere around 2025/2026. Radcliffe said he's fine with sitting this one out, guessing the producers will want to make their own mark. 🧹🎬 The big wigs at MAX promise a "faithful adaptation" of the beloved books, with J.K. Rowling herself on board as executive producer. 🧙‍♀️ Meanwhile, Radcliffe's gearing up for his next gig, "Miracle Workers: End Times," premiering on TBS in July. 🗓️🎞️
