šæš¤ Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. This marks the first time in over 75 years a major studio owns a theater chain, breaking the long-standing Paramount Consent Decrees, which were put in place back in 1948 to prevent studio monopolies. While Amazon and Netflix have previously dipped their toes in the theater game by acquiring individual venues like the ArcLight and the Egyptian Theatre, Sony is the first traditional major studio to make such a power play post-2020. This acquisition could signal a new era of studio-owned theaters, promising curated movie experiences, exclusive releases, and a revitalized push for that in-person movie magic we all crave. But don't worry, Alamo Drafthouse fansāyour beloved theater chain, known for its unique approach and strict no-talking policies, will continue to operate under CEO Michael Kustermann as part of the new Sony Pictures Experiences division.
šŗš Tubi is emerging as the go-to for budget-savvy viewers. With subscription prices for Netflix, Disney+, Max, and Peacock climbing, consumers are flocking to Tubi, Fox Corpās free, ad-supported platform. Nielsen data reveals Tubiās May viewership hit a record 1M viewers (thatās the average number of people watching at any given time), leaving Disney+ in the dust and crushing competitors like Peacock and Paramount+. Despite a sluggish ad market that's got other platforms feeling like a sad trombone, Tubi's third-quarter revenue surged a jaw-dropping 22%. How, you ask? Tubiās diverse content and original programming are capturing the hearts (and eyeballs) of younger audiences. In the era of streamflation, it seems like viewers are leaning away from pricey subscriptions and saying hello to affordable, ad-supported options like Tubi.
šš The Emmys are slimming down this year. Comedy and drama series submissions have dropped almost 40%. Thanks to production slowdowns and last year's strikes, the number of shows vying for those coveted statuettes has taken a nosedive. This means fewer acting nominationsādown by over 40% in some categories. Even the āOutstanding Scripted Variety Seriesā category, home to heavy hitters like āSNLā and āLast Week Tonight,ā has vanished from the ballot into thin air. Poof! Gone. Finito. On the bright side, live and pre-recorded variety specials saw a slight uptick. Overall, the number of program submissions has plummeted by a whopping 27%. So, when nominations are announced on July 17, expect the Emmy race to be tighter than a pair of skinny jeans after Thanksgiving dinner.
