LAST WEEKEND’S
BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN 🎟️
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny gave us a bit of a fumble, raking in only $60M domestically and $130M globally during its opening weekend. 🧳📉 Not quite the treasure we were expecting, Indy! 😓
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is still showing off in its 5th week, making it the third highest-grossing film in North America this year! 🕷️💰 Talk about spider-senses tingling!
Elemental is holding on strong in week 3, racking up $11.3M over the weekend. Way to go, Pixar! 🎉🔥
No Hard Feelings is giving us some soft figures, settling in at fourth place with a domestic total of $29.3M after its second week. Not too shabby for a rom-com! 💘🎥
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a quiet achiever, making a respectable $7M in its 4th week. 🚗💥 Kudos, Autobots!
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken didn't quite make a splash, falling outside of the top 5 with a $5.2M opening weekend. Better luck next time, Kraken! 🦑😅
The Little Mermaid is still floating along nicely in its 6th week, with a total of $281M domestically. Now that's a lot of clams! 🧜♀️💵
The Flash took a bit of a tumble in week 3, bringing in only $5M domestically. We hope it can pick up some speed again soon! ⚡📉
Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City still shines, beating his previous film's performance. Way to go, Wes! 🌟
A24's Past Lives is an art-house hit, earning $6.5M, and seems to be planning a long summer run. 🔥
Alright folks, let's dive into the juicy buzz that's got everyone talking in the showbiz world. Keeping you up to speed with all the hot scoops, here are the highlights you just can't miss… 🎬🍿🔥

Writers and Actors Unite
Possible Dual SAG and WGA Strike Looms Large
Paramount picket in NYC posted on May 31. (Credit: @avishaiw on Twitter.)
We might be seeing the first dual strike by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Writers' Guild of America (WGA) since 1960. The WGA has been on strike since May, and now it looks like the actors might join them on the picket lines. 🎭✍️ The SAG's current contract was set to end on June 30, but they've extended the negotiation deadline to July 12. Big names like Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Pedro Pascal, and Joaquin Phoenix have signed a letter pushing for no compromise in their demands. 📝
What it means for television:
According to some industry insiders, it's not going have a major immediate impact on what you're currently seeing on TV. 🎬 Why? Because the Writers' Guild of America (WGA) has already been on strike, which has already halted most production. 🚫🖊️ Your late-night shows have already gone dark since May, and most series are either already completed or not shot at all. 😮 However, once things settle down, expect fewer scripted series for a bit. 📉 On a lighter note, your favorite soap operas, talk shows, and reality TV shows are safe - their contract doesn't expire until next year! 🎉📺
What it means for streaming and movies:
While it's unclear how much content streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, or AppleTV+ have stashed away, this strike could ironically work in their favor. 🎁📺 Why? Because if networks can't offer new content, viewers might pivot to streaming platforms even more. 🔄 But that doesn't make negotiations easier, thanks to differing business models and interests. 😬
Cinema goers and Marvel fans, brace yourselves! 🎞️🦸 We've already seen a bunch of films, like "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty", getting their release dates pushed back due to this messy labor situation. And if the strike happens and drags on, only truly independent films (think no ties to big studios or streaming platforms) could continue production. 🎬🔄 So, expect some shuffle in your movie schedules and maybe a quieter period in theaters next year. 📆🎦
What it means for actors and writers:
So, we're looking at the first joint SAG and Writers' Guild of America (WGA) strike since 1960, which is historic in itself. 📆🔙 Back in the day, that dispute was mainly about residuals from movies being shown on TV. 📺💸 Fast forward to now, residuals are still a concern, but we've got more modern issues on the table, especially regarding staffing writers' rooms and the use of AI. 🤖✍️ You could say, it's the same script, different cast, with technology playing the villain this time.
Now, how long could this drama last? Well, your guess is as good as ours. 🤷♂️ The SAG strike in 1960 lasted six weeks, while the longest one in history, in 2000, dragged on for six months.
Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you posted as the situation unfolds.
📺'The Summer I Turned Pretty' S2: Love Triangles & Taylor Swift Tunes Late last week, Prime Video dropped the trailer for season 2 of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty', and oh boy, it's full of love triangles and tantalizing teasers! 😲💔 The story picks up with Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah's tangled love story, while the family grapples with Susannah's recurring cancer. As if that's not enough, there's an unexpected visitor causing more chaos! 🏖️😱 But hold up, the cherry on top is that we get to hear Taylor Swift's re-recorded "Back to December" in the trailer - total Swiftie bonus, right? 🎵😍 The drama's set to unravel on Prime Video starting July 14, with weekly episodes till the finale on Aug 18. Can't wait! 📅🎉
🏆 TCA Awards Showdown: HBO, FX and Hulu's The Bear Lead Nominations So, the 39th annual Television Critics Association’s awards are creating quite a stir, with HBO's Succession and The Last of Us, along with FX/Hulu comedy The Bear, stealing the spotlight! 📺🏆 HBO and its streaming pal, Max, are totally killing it with 20 nods, while FX, thanks to The Bear, racked up 10. Disney+ and Peacock are also in the race with nine each. The competition for the program of the year is fierce with shows like last year’s winner, ABC’s Abbott Elementary, and HBO's Succession. We've got some fresh faces in the outstanding new program category, and the best drama and comedy categories are jam-packed with awesome shows. Can't wait for August 7 when the winners will be announced! 🥳👏
💔 In Memoriam: Farewell to Alan Arkin Man, it's tough to say goodbye to legends. Oscar-winning actor Alan Arkin has passed away at 89. 😢 His family's heartfelt statement underlined his immense talent and how much he meant to them and others. Known for his memorable roles in Little Miss Sunshine, Argo, and the Kominsky Method, he's left an indelible mark on Hollywood. 🌟 Tributes from his fellow actors have been rolling in, all highlighting his kindness, comedic genius, and extraordinary talent. His loss will surely be deeply felt in the world of cinema. 🕯️
🐶 Reservation Dogs Series Finale: See Ya, Pups! Hey, so you know how we all love the FX/Hulu series RESERVATION DOGS? Well, they're calling it quits after the third season, mate. 😮💨 Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the brilliant guys behind this show, think it's the right creative move. The last hurrah, a 10-episode season, kicks off on August 2. Despite some big award wins but also a few snubs, the creators think season three's the perfect time to wrap it up. 🎬 They've had a great run and received high praise from the big guys at FX, and plenty of love from major publications. Don't worry though, Harjo and Waititi aren't going anywhere - they'll keep working with FX. 💪 So, gear up for an awesome final season, Rez Dogs fans! 🍿
🥊 From Rags to Rocky: Stallone's Inspiring Journey Hey, have you heard about the new Netflix doc "Sly" that's all about Sylvester Stallone's life and career? 🎥 It's a pretty inspiring story of how he went from living in Hell's Kitchen to becoming a Hollywood icon. The man himself shares some solid wisdom like "live the illusion that you could be great", and urges us to "seize the day". 🙌 He's had quite a ride, from writing and starring in ROCKY, to other big hits like RAMBO and THE EXPENDABLES. Talk about a true legend! 👏
📺 High Desert: Show's Over, Folks! Not all news is good news, guys. 🙁 Apple Studios' comedy drama series HIGH DESERT, starring Patricia Arquette, won't be returning for a second season. 📉 Arquette announced the bummer news on Instagram (below), expressing her disappointment but also her love for playing the character Peggy. 😔 The show, created by a talented team and featuring a strong recurring cast, revolved around Peggy turning her life around as a private investigator in a small desert town. Here's to hoping we see more of Arquette soon! 🍀
👾 Tron: Ares Casts Jodie Turner-Smith, Gears Up for Shoot The Tron sequel that's been in the works forever is finally taking shape! Jodie Turner-Smith, who totally rocked it in Queen & Slim, is joining Jared Leto and Greta Lee for the cyber adventure. 🎥 The director's chair is taken by Joachim Ronning, who gave us gems like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean. 🎬 The script's storyline centers around a program that crosses into our world, with Leto playing the program's manifestation, Ares. Lee's character is a video game programmer and CEO. We're still waiting to hear who Turner-Smith will be playing. 🤔 She's also got some other cool projects coming up, so stay tuned! 👀
🤖Terminator: Schwarzenegger Praises Cameron's Vision Here's something to think about. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently mentioned that James Cameron's 1984 film "TERMINATOR" pretty much predicted the rise of artificial intelligence. 😲 Arnold commended Cameron as an extraordinary writer and director and wished he could take credit for the movie and his iconic character. He's hung up his Terminator boots after six films and believes that it's time for the world to move on to a different theme with the franchise. So kudos to Cameron for his visionary filmmaking! 👏
🪂 Tom Cruise: Daring Stunts for MI: Dead Reckoning It's no secret that Tom Cruise is a daredevil, but for his latest Mission: Impossible film, he's really pushing the envelope! 🚀 According to director Christopher McQuarrie, Cruise tackled speed-flying, which is like skydiving but way more unpredictable. 🌪️ Cruise's words about the stunt: “We’re gonna do spirals, and we’re landing at incredibly high speed, 80 kilometers an hour.” 😲 While the crew was terrified behind the cameras, Cruise nailed the stunt. Talk about a one-of-a-kind adventure! 🙌 Catch all the action when Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters on July 12. 🍿
Let's cut to the chase and dive straight into the gold mine 🏅— the trailers that are about to make your movie-night queue stretch around the block! 🎬
