🎬🏆 Oscar Nominations 2024: The 96th Oscar nominations are out, and Hollywood is buzzing – not just about who made the cut, but also about who didn't. Here are some key takeaways:
‘Oppenheimer’ dominated with 13 nominations.
‘Poor Things’ shined with 11 nominations.
‘Barbie’ received 8 nominations, but key figures like Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were snubbed. The omission of these major talents has stirred quite a bit of conversation.
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ missed in some major categories, but scored in others, including an unexpected music nomination.
There was a strong international presence in major categories. 'Anatomy Of A Fall' and 'The Zone Of Interest' each secured 5 nominations.
'The Holdovers,' 'Poor Things,' and 'American Fiction' received Best Picture nods.
Diane Warren and John Williams received their 15th and 54th nominations, respectively.
Lily Gladstone became the first Native American acting nominee.
Martin Scorcese set a record as the most-nominated living director.
Notably absent from the list were Leonardo DiCaprio and Bradley Cooper for Best Director.
The ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and will air from 4pm-7:30pm on March 10th. See the full list of nominations 👉 here. 👈
🎬👋 Scott Stuber's Netflix Curtain Call: Scott Stuber, Netflix’s Chairman of Film, is set to leave the streaming giant in March to start his own media company. Stuber, the architect behind Netflix’s original film division since 2017, has been a pivotal figure, but his departure was somewhat expected by industry insiders. Under Stuber, Netflix saw a surge in original film output and forged crucial ties with top-tier talent, albeit with mixed financial returns. His push for more theatrical releases and transparent viewership data highlighted a progressive outlook, slightly at odds with co-CEO Ted Sarandos' initial reservations. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria is temporarily stepping into Stuber's shoes as Netflix gears up for a $17B spend on original content in 2024.
🎥📈 Netflix’s Earnings Highlights: Netflix unveiled its impressive earnings report yesterday via a live-streamed, unscripted session. Despite a noticeable filter in the Q&A process and the absence of the usual skeptical analyst tones, the call flowed smoothly with little room for doubt or questioning. Here's the scoop in a nutshell:
📈 Subscriber Surge: Netflix added 13M new viewers, hitting a whopping 260M globally.
💰 Robust Financials: Revenue hit $8.8B with a $1.5B operating income.
🔒 Password Crackdown Effect: The fight against password sharing contributed majorly to this quarter's growth.
🎯 Strategic Focus for 2024: Netflix aims to enhance its core offerings (series, films, games, live, and sports-adjacent programming), grow its advertising business, and deepen fan connections through marketing and live experiences.
🤝 Content Licensing: Netflix aims to benefit from studio partnerships and licensing.
🌐 Market Positioning: Netflix is steering clear of linear assets and traditional company mergers.
🤼 WWE Deal: A $5B, 10-year contract for WWE Raw, marks Netflix's stride into live events.
⚽ Selective Sports Strategy: The WWE deal is a specific market move, not a broader sports strategy shift.
🏆 Live Event Investments: Netflix is set to host The Netflix Slam and the SAG Awards, exploring audience preferences in live formats.
