But first, let’s take a look at what happened at the box office this past weekend!

LAST WEEKEND’S
🎟️ BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN 🎟️

🏹 The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes: Saw a modest -35% drop to $28.8M in its second week, claiming the top spot at the box office.

⚔️ Napoleon: Debuted with a solid $20.4M domestically and an impressive $78.8M globally, leading the worldwide box office.

🌟 Wish: Had a lukewarm start with a $19.5M domestic weekend and $31.7M over five days, falling short compared to past Disney animated musicals. Globally, it opened with $49M.

🎤 Trolls Band Together: Experienced a -42% drop in its second weekend, earning $17.5M domestically. Globally, it has accumulated $145.8M, aiming to match the original's success.

🦃Thanksgiving: Dropped -31% in its second weekend to $7.1M domestically, with a global total of $29.1M.

💥The Marvels: Saw a -37% drop in its third weekend, earning $6.4M domestically. With steeper drops overseas, its global total is now $187.1M, potentially becoming one of the lowest-grossing MCU films.

🔍 Saltburn: Expanded to 1,566 theaters in its second weekend, earning $1.7M for a top ten spot and a $2.7M five-day total, aiming to match ‘Promising Young Woman's’ success.

⚽️ Next Goal Wins: Fell -32% in its second weekend to $1.7M, slightly steeper than Taika Waititi's previous non-Thor releases but milder than some recent comedies.

📝🎬 Amazon Studios Faces WGA Heat: Post-strike Hollywood is bustling again, with writers diving back into projects and studios reviving their production schedules. However, Amazon Studios is under fire from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) for keeping some shows on pause that were already in motion before the strike. The WGA sent a stern letter to Amazon, threatening legal action for violating the Strike Termination Agreement (STA) and failing to resume writers' rooms. Notably, high-profile series like Marvel’s Silk: Spider Society remain in the dark, leaving writers unpaid and stuck in limbo due to contractual obligations. Agents and lawyers have reportedly joined the fray, yet Amazon Studios remains silent on the issue. Insiders suggest the delays, which feel more punitive than procedural, are likely due to frustrations over new contract terms. Amidst this post-strike chaos, the industry is still adjusting, with writers regaining their footing and studios reshaping their content strategies.

📜🗳️ SAG-AFTRA Releases Full Draft Agreement Amid Ratification Voting: Over two weeks following the end of their nearly four-month strike, SAG-AFTRA has finally unveiled the complete draft of their tentative agreement with studios. Guild president Fran Drescher kept her word, releasing the 129-page 2023 TV/Theatrical Contracts Memorandum of Agreement for member scrutiny. This move, breaking away from tradition, comes as the guild's leadership faces scrutiny, especially around the AI provisions in the deal. The agreement, valued at over $1B, is a subject of contention among members, with notable figures like Justine Bateman and Matthew Modine voicing strong opposition. The Guild has included past contracts for context and emphasizes that the draft is not final until signed by both parties. With ratification voting open until Dec. 5, the Guild hopes to solidify these "historic" gains, despite the mixed reception and ongoing debate within its ranks.

🎬💰 Hollywood Strikes Impact Ad Spending: The recent strikes in Hollywood have led to a 22% decrease in ad spending for films, TV shows, and streaming services, dropping to $2.9B between May and October. While films saw a smaller decline due to an influx of post-pandemic productions, TV and streaming services experienced sharper drops of 27% and 28%, respectively. Overall advertising from Jan. to Oct. 2023 fell by 8% to $5.5B. The shift in advertising trends, partly due to less fresh content, led to a move towards platforms like YouTube and social media. MediaRadar CEO Todd Krizelman anticipates a recovery in ad revenue within six months, but cautions a slower bounce back for broadcasters. The post-strike period might see a shift in focus towards improving content quality and profitability in broadcasting.
