💡SPOTLIGHT💡

Hollywood’s ‘Mutual Suicide Pact’
The Side Effects of SAG & WGA Strikes

As the industry feels the strain of the dual strike, the major studios are being urged to return to the bargaining table. WGA negotiating committee co-chair Chris Keyser said that major studios are in “what increasingly seems like a mutual-suicide pact,” reminding the studios that they are negotiating, not at war with writers and actors. The only way to put an end to all this? Come back to the negotiating table and address the mistreatment of writers and actors.

“Now [the studios] are in a streaming war with each other, an admittedly difficult transition, and as they face the future, their interest and business models could not be more different: from Disney to Fox, to Netflix to Amazon. […] We root for their success – all of them. They root for each other’s failure. We are the creative ammunition through which they will succeed; they are each other’s apex predators.”

-Chris Keyser, WGA Negotiating Committee Co-chair

Streamers Weigh Shelving Completed Series

The big question for streaming executives right now: air or shelve their content? 🤔 Some fully shot but undated series might be moved to early 2024, or they could be benched until the strike is completely resolved. Why? They have no stars to promote their shows.

Netflix is reportedly considering holding back as many as five undated shows, while other platforms like FX, Apple TV+, Showtime, and Paramount+ are sitting on several completed seasons, deliberating what to do... But the need for a steady supply of fresh content is key to keeping their audiences happy. Holding shows for too long could negatively affect their success, as we saw during the pandemic. Pressure’s on for the streamers.

The Paradox of Cash Piles & Strikes

Surprisingly, the ongoing actors and writers strikes are boosting cash flow and profit margins (or reducing losses) in the short term for major studios and streamers. 📈 With everything shut down, companies are holding onto cash that would have been spent on productions.

So, how are they going to spend that extra dough? 💵

  • Studios might simply save it to fund rapid production resumption post-strike.

  • They might invest in non-strike affected content, like reality shows or international productions.

  • Alternatively, they could return the money to shareholders via dividends or stock buybacks, or use it for potential mergers and acquisitions.

While this extra cash seem beneficial short term by boosting their financial reserves, the long-term effects could be damaging, leading to a serious shortage of new scripted content.

For major players, the balance is going to be challenging. Studios want immediate financial gains, but they must also ensure long-term sustainability. These strikes might lead to an overall reduction in content spending, possibly ending the 'peak content' era.

PR Firms Feel the Squeeze

While major studios are saving money, PR firms are facing tough times. Actors going on "hiatus" from their publicists due to the strikes have hit midsize PR agencies hard, with revenue down 80%. Proprietors are hoping to survive without laying off employees until September or October.

Publicists have spoken out about the collateral damage of the strike on their businesses and employees. Large PR firms are also feeling the impact, and a Zoom meeting with SAG-AFTRA's chief of communications/marketing has been arranged to address the situation.

Mattel's Hollywood Domination: Barbie Sequels and More! 🌟🎥
Mattel has become the new big player in Hollywood after the massive success of "Barbie." With a vision to turn their iconic toys into a cinematic universe, Mattel has 14 projects in active development, including "Barney," "Polly Pocket," "Thomas and Friends," and "American Girl." While director Greta Gerwig isn't thinking about a "Barbie" sequel just yet, it's clear that Mattel and Warner Bros. want more after the film's staggering $380 million worldwide box office haul in five days. In fact, Mattel and Warner Bros. Discovery have just renewed their toy licensing deal. What should we expect? Unique and surreal takes on beloved toys, like Daniel Kaluuya's live-action "Barney" film, Lily Collins' "Polly Pocket" comedy, and Vin Diesel's "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots." I smell a toy-tastic cinematic universe in the making. 🚀

We hear there are upcoming live-action films based on these Mattel toys. 🤔

Influencers Caught in the Hollywood Strike Tug-of-War ⭐️
The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has put Hollywood-focused social media stars in a tricky spot, caught between strict union rules and their need to work with studios. The recent set of guidelines released by SAG-AFTRA has influencers scratching their heads, unsure of how to move forward. The rules bar influencers from accepting new work for struck companies or promoting struck content, leaving them with tough decisions to make. While some creators stand in solidarity with the union, others are hesitant to lose lucrative deals and risk their follower base. 🤔

IMAX Sees “Paradigm Shift” in Moviegoing 🍿📈
IMAX just crushed Wall Street's expectations like a blockbuster hit, with a jaw-dropping 32% sales surge to $98 million in Q2, and their adjusted EPS was shooting up 271% like a rocket. They went from making frowny faces at a $2.85 million loss last year to doing a happy dance with a $8.35 million net profit! 🤑 The secret to their success? A winning mix of Hollywood glam and local language charm that powered their global box office to a stellar $268.3 million, an 8% YoY jump. And don't even get us started on their amazing weekend with "Oppenheimer" leading the charge! The world is loving IMAX’s premium movie experience post-Covid, and they're just getting started! 🎉
