Latest on the SAG & WGA Strikes

AMPTP Hits Up Their Ex, Hoping to Talk 😬

Striking members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) have responded with both hopeful optimism and cautious skepticism after the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) reached out to restart talks amid the ongoing contract negotiations.

While WGA leaders are hopeful that AMPTP is approaching the discussions with a more open mind, they remain wary of potential compromises on their proposals. The writers are comparing the sudden AMPTP talks to an unexpected call from an ex: "I feel like my ex of a year just called me up at 4 a.m. and asked if I miss them yet." They're sticking to their demands and will keep protesting until they see real change.

The meeting between WGA and AMPTP is scheduled for Friday to discuss negotiations.

SAG Urges AMPTP To Reenter Talks

Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA's Duncan Crabtree-Ireland is making it clear that the AMPTP have been MIA since July 12. SAG is urging them to return to the bargaining table and put an end to this strike.

SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher is ready for the long haul and is committed to getting an agreement that benefits everyone. She even testified at a public committee hearing, advocating for actors and writers to get a fair share of the studios' streaming subscription income. The New York City Council showed some love by passing resolutions in support of SAG-AFTRA and WGA, showing political solidarity with unionized labor.

SAG Defends Interim Agreements

Remember how some stars like Viola Davis and Sarah Silverman were voicing their worries about those SAG-AFTRA interim agreements? Well, SAG-AFTRA has come back to set the record straight, and is justifying these interim agreements for independent productions amid the ongoing performers' strike.

They believe the terms of these agreements will prevent content distribution by struck companies until there's an industrywide agreement in place. No loopholes here! It's all part of their strategic approach in the 2023 negotiations and strike. The projects with these agreements are independent from the companies in AMPTP. So, it's a win-win.

The terms and conditions of these agreements reflect what SAG-AFTRA is fighting for in their ongoing negotiations with AMPTP, showing that they're being reasonable with their demands. You gotta prove your case, right? 📜💼 The agreements also aim to direct production budgets to union-covered projects. 🤝

An updated list of projects with interim agreements can be found here.

“We urge independent producers to apply and encourage SAG-AFTRA members to work on the projects that obtain an Interim Agreement, along with all of the other permissible work we support.”

-SAG-AFTRA

Stars Step Up to Help Fellow Actors

In the midst of the uncertainty for actors, some of Hollywood's biggest names are stepping up to lend a helping hand. SAG-AFTRA has raised over $15 million from top-paid actors to create an emergency financial assistance program for performers facing tough times during the strike.

The list of generous donors includes George Clooney, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Julia Roberts, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Meryl Streep, and Oprah Winfrey. Wow, talk about star power! 🌟

🎬 Barbie Faces Troubles Abroad 🚫 "Barbie" is encountering censorship challenges in the Middle East. Leading regional exhibitor Vox Cinemas delayed the film's release to Aug. 31 due to edits requested by censors related to alleged LGBTQ-related content. Because the requested edits are unlikely to be approved by the studio, it’s uncertain if the film will be released at all in some Middle East territories, including Saudi Arabia, the region's top market.

Meanwhile in Japan…

The official U.S. Barbie Twitter account has commented on Barbie/Oppenheimer mashups that make jokes of atomic bombs, sparking outrage and the trending hashtag #NoBarbenheimer. Warner Bros. Japan and the U.S. film group have issued apologies, but the impact of the controversy on the film's performance remains to be seen. 🇯🇵

🎥 Film Critics vs. Influencers: The Devaluation of Cinema 🤔 This week, the Guardian wrote about a recent trend is shifting the power of film criticism from knowledgeable writers to social media influencers, and it's causing concern. During the London press preview of Greta Gerwig's film "Barbie," influencers were encouraged to share only positive reactions on Twitter before the embargo for reviews was lifted. This strategy aims to use influencers' positive endorsements to boost the film's box office success. However, it raises questions about the lack of impartiality and critical thinking in film discussions. With film studios controlling the pre-release narrative and influencers seeking freebies, genuine film criticism is being overshadowed, leading to a devaluation of cinema and a loss of insightful perspectives on the industry's challenges and achievements.

🚀 NASA+ Streaming Service on the Launch Pad for Late 2023 📺 Who’s the latest to hit the streaming world? Yup… its NASA. They’re set to launch their own streaming service, NASA+, later this year. And guess what? It's completely free and ad-free! 🆓🚫 You'll be able to catch live event coverage and watch original video series, all dedicated to the fascinating world of aeronautics and space.

📺 Reality TV Producers Struggle Amid Strikes 😩 Reality TV workers are feeling the pinch as Hollywood grapples with dual strikes from SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild. Despite networks heavily relying on unscripted shows for their fall schedules, job opportunities are scarce, leaving many professionals in a tough spot. The pandemic initially boosted reality TV, but now, the industry is tightening its budget, with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's spending cuts taking a toll. Workers are frustrated as they shape stories but are not recognized as writers, and some are worried about their show's future with no union support. The reality TV world is in need of change, and workers hope for better times ahead. 🤞

Angus Cloud's Upcoming Projects and Tributes After His Tragic Passing 😢 Before his untimely death at 25, actor Angus Cloud had completed filming for Universal's upcoming monster thriller, set for release in April 2024. The film, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, also stars Kathryn Newton, Dan Stevens, and others. Cloud was known for his breakout role as Fez in "Euphoria" and had wrapped filming for "Freaky Tales" and other projects. The entertainment industry mourns his loss, with filmmakers and colleagues remembering him as a bright and vibrant collaborator. Cloud's cause of death remains unknown, and his passing leaves a void in the projects he had worked on.
