šŸŽ¬ LA struggles, Apple shifts, and Netflix stands firmā€¦

šŸ“½ļøšŸŽ LAā€™s grip on the industry is slipping. A new filmLA report reveals that only 18% of scripted projects were shot in Hollywood in 2023, down from 22% in 2022. Itā€™s a dire mismatch: 27% of the industry's workforce resides in SoCal, but local work is scarce. The study shows a 20% decline in valuable scripted productions over two years, worsened by the 2023 strikes and the end of Peak TV. The UK, Ontario, and Georgia are luring away productions, threatening the $43B in wages Hollywood pumps into California's economy yearly. FilmLA president Paul Audley warns of ripple effects beyond entertainment: closed suppliers mean job losses for caterers, laundries, and local shops, leading to less tax revenue and unpaid rent. As 2024 bears the full brunt of 2023's strikes, local officials are scrambling to implement incentives and stem the Hollywood exodus.

ā€œWeā€™re now at a place where inadequate investment in this industry places other economic supports at risk. For each film industry supplier that closes his or her doors due to lack of steady work ā€” those entrepreneurs no longer employ people, generate sales taxes or pay rent. Their former employees, lacking an income, then have no money for groceries, tuition, and bills. When local industries decline, the effects can be far ranging, so this is definitely a problem California needs to address.ā€

Paul Audley, FilmLA President

šŸŽšŸ“ŗ Apple TV+ is cozying up to Amazon. In a surprise move, it will be joining Amazon's Prime Video channels as an add on. Itā€™s a significant shift in Apple's streaming strategy. For $9.99/month, Prime subscribers can now binge ā€˜Ted Lassoā€™ and ā€˜Severanceā€™ without switching apps. For Apple, this move is all about scale. Despite its award-winning content, Apple TV+ remains a smaller player in the streaming wars. By tapping into Prime Video's "hundreds of millions" of users worldwide, Apple aims to dramatically expand its reach. This partnershipā€™s a departure from Apple's previous walled garden approach, prioritizing growth over exclusivity. For Amazon, it's another feather in its cap as it positions Prime Video as a "broadcast network on steroids," offering a one-stop shop for diverse streaming options.

šŸŽ¬šŸ’° Netflix is dispelling rumors of a new pay model for talent. At the Bloomberg Screentime Conference, CCO Bela Bajaria tackled whispers that the streaming giant was mulling a shift to less upfront cash and more backend for creatives. Despite industry chatter, Bajaria firmly stated, "We are not changing our model." While she acknowledged a handful of "bespoke deals" existā€”"two fingers" worth, to be preciseā€”where talent opted for backend potential, these are exceptions. Netflix is doubling down on its current compensation strategy, which Bajaria insists "works great for talent" and filmmakers alike.
