🎬 Déjà Vu

Emmys Recap...Again, TIFF Wraps, Late-night TV Struggles, and MORE!

👋 Good morning! Emmy night got a bit ruff for John Oliver. The ‘Last Week Tonight’ host, mid-acceptance speech, took a moment to remember his beloved pup, only to have the orchestra interrupt. Oliver, quick as ever, quipped it was "perfect timing" before dropping an F-bomb and comparing himself to Sarah McLachlan. More on last night’s ceremony below. 👇👀

LAST WEEKEND’S
🎟️ BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN 🎟️

  1. 😱 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: $51.6M domestic weekend (-54%), $188M domestic total, $264.3M global. Held onto the #1 spot in its second frame, pulling in solid numbers despite the expected drop.

  2. 🤐 Speak No Evil: $11.5M domestic opening, $20.8M global debut. Blumhouse's latest horror flick had a decent start, with critics and audiences both giving it a thumbs up (85% on Rotten Tomatoes).

  3. 🦸‍♂️ Deadpool & Wolverine: $5.2M domestic weekend (-26%), $621.5M domestic total, $1.305B global. Still performing its 8th weekend, now the 7th biggest MCU title globally.

  4. 🤔 Am I Racist?: $4.75M domestic opening. Conservative commentator Matt Walsh's mockumentary scored the third-biggest opening for a doc in almost a decade, playing well in red states.

  5. 🇺🇸 Reagan: $3M domestic weekend, $23.3M domestic total. The Ronald Reagan biopic rounds out the top five in its third weekend.

  6. 🎯 The Killer's Game: $2.6M domestic opening. Lionsgate's Dave Bautista-led action movie misfired badly, suggesting the actor hasn't yet established himself as a reliable box office draw in leading roles.

  7. 👽 Alien: Romulus: $2.4M domestic weekend (-39%), $101.3M domestic total, $330.7M global. This $80M-budgeted thriller is still showing some strength, especially in Asian markets.

  8. ❤️ It Ends With Us: $2M domestic weekend (-45%), $144.9M domestic total, $325.5M global.

  9. 🙏 The Forge: $2M domestic weekend (-33%), $24.1M domestic total.

  10. 🎬 God's Not Dead: In God We Trust: $1.47M domestic opening.

The domestic box office totaled $93.6M, up 33% from the same weekend last year. Despite this uptick, 2024's overall box office is still trailing 2023's figures. The industry is now looking to the upcoming fall slate, including highly anticipated titles like ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ and ‘Gladiator II’ to potentially close this gap and finish the year strong.

📺🏆 The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards took place last night at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. If you’re experiencing déja vu, you’re not alone. It's only been eight months since the last Emmy ceremony, thanks to last year's Hollywood strikes pushing the 2023 awards to January. This time around, father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy took the helm as hosts. Here are some highlights:

🏆 Big Winners

  • 'Shōgun' won a total of 18 Emmys including Best Drama, an all-time record for a single season of TV.

  • ‘Hacks’ won Outstanding Comedy Series.

  • ‘The Bear’ won a total of 11 Emmys, with Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach taking home acting trophies. The show broke the record for most Emmy wins for a comedy series in a single year, but shockingly lost the top prize for Outstanding Comedy Series.

  • Hiroyuki Sanada won Lead Actor in a Drama Series for 'Shōgun.'

  • 'Baby Reindeer' won Best Limited Series.

  • Jodie Foster won Lead Actress in a Limited Series for 'True Detective: Night Country.

🍿 Memorable Moments

🎬🏆 TIFF 2024 has rolled credits, wrapping up two weeks of global premieres and setting the stage for awards season. As the red carpets are rolled away, all eyes turn to the coveted People's Choice Award—TIFF's crown jewel and a potential Oscar harbinger. 12 of the last 14 winners of the People’s Choice Award went on to snag Best Picture nods at the Academy Awards. Let's peek at the trophy case:

  • People's Choice Award: 'The Life of Chuck,' Mike Flanagan's Stephen King adaptation starring Tom Hiddleston. (First Runner-Up: 'Emilia Pérez,' Second Runner-Up: 'Anora')

  • People's Choice Documentary Award: 'The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal' (dir. Mike Downie)

  • People's Choice Midnight Madness Award: 'The Substance' (dir. Coralie Fargeat, starring Demi Moore)

  • Platform Competition Award: 'They Will Be Dust' (dir. Carlos Marqués-Marcet)

  • Best Canadian Feature Film: 'Shepherds' (dir. Sophie Deraspe)

🎭📉 Late-night TV's struggling to keep up in the streaming era. Once a cash cow, these shows are now undergoing significant budget cuts. Jimmy Fallon's ‘Tonight Show’ is cutting to four nights a week, Seth Meyers lost his house band, and CBS axed James Corden's ‘Late Late Show’ altogether. Viewership's in freefall—even top-rated Stephen Colbert has lost 32% of his audience in five years. Why? Younger viewers ditching linear TV for YouTube clips and TikTok. Networks are scrambling to justify costs, with hosts moonlighting as award show MCs and corporate event darlings. Some are even venturing into haunted houses (we're looking at you, Fallon). As streaming platforms fumble to crack the late-night code, the industry's racing against the clock. It's not quite time to cue the sad trombone, but late-night's definitely singing a different tune these days.
