š¬ā Dan Lin at the Helm: Big news from Netflixāafter much speculation around whoād take over for Scott Stuber, Dan Lin has officially been announced as the new head of Netflixās film division. If youāre not familiar, Dan Lin is the producer behind hits like the 'Sherlock Holmes' series, 'It,' and the 'Lego Movie' franchise, as well as the new live-action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' series. Historically, Lin's deep ties to his production company, Rideback, and his non-profit, Rideback Rise, made him hesitant to leave for high-profile positions. Now, he's ready to leave Rideback behind, with plans to start at Netflix on April 1.
āWhile Iāve been approached many times during my past 15 years at Rideback, I could truly never imagine leaving until Bela reached out with this incredible opportunity. Belaās vision for the Netflix film division immediately interested me as it aligned so strongly with my own personal and professional values and what we have been building at Rideback. There is such a strong foundation thatās already been established in the film division at Netflix, one Iām excited to take to the next level as we continue growing this creative community to make Netflix the #1 home for filmmakers.ā
š¬š±Disney and Relianceās $8.5B Power Move: Disney and Reliance Industries have stitched together an $8.5B deal, merging their streaming and TV might into one colossal entity. If youāre wondering who Reliance is, Reliance Industries is Indiaās largest private sector juggernaut. Though they have a hand in many industries, Reliance has an enormous impact on digital entertainment in India and around the world, with a network including 60 TV channels and the JioCinema streaming platform. This joint ventureās a big deal for Disney, giving it a much-needed boost to win back subscribers and take on global competitors like Netflix. Disney had been facing challenges since acquiring Star India back in 2019. The newly merged entity will combine shows, movies and sports under one roof, aiming to wow 750M viewers in India and the Indian diaspora, which remains the worldās most populous market.
ššµ Georgiaās Tax Credit Shakeup: The Georgia House just gave the thumbs up to a new bill that could change the game for movies and TV shows made in the state. They're talking about putting a cap on how much money in tax credits is available to productions that aren't Georgia-based each year. This is a big deal because these tax breaks are why Georgia has become such a hot spot for filming over the last 15 years. It wouldnāt kick in until 2026, but if the bill passes, there could be a cap of around $900M per year on these tax credits. Supporters of the bill say itās all about keeping Georgiaās film scene sustainable and making sure the budget isnāt all over the place. On the flip side, critics are worried this might push away smaller movie projects and affect local jobs and businesses. As the bill heads to the Senate, everyone's watching to see if Georgia can keep its spot as a go-to place for filming.
