👋 Good morning. Cillian Murphy has been outdone at being Cillian Murphy. His 19-year-old son Aran gave a red carpet interview at the premiere of HBO's 'Youth' (he stars opposite Sharon Horgan) and clips racked up millions of views in a matter of hours, less for anything he said than for the way he said it. People couldn't get over the posture, the pauses, the voice. As one commenter put it, "I had no idea Cillian had a kid, but I immediately knew it was his son." Cillian's reaction is unconfirmed, but we assume it was a slow nod and a very quiet "yeah."
Welcome back from the weekend. The Emmys are tonight, 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock, Mariska Hargitay hosting. Yes, on a Monday. Blame Sunday Night Football. Until then, here's how the weekend went at the box office. 👇
BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN
🎟️ ‘Practical Magic 2’ couldn’t conjure much…

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in ‘Practical Magic 2’
| WEEKEND TOTAL $82.7M| VS. 2025 -56.2%| VS. LAST WKND -8.9% | |
Practical Magic 2 NEW Warner Bros. · $30M domestic weekend · Global total: $46M · Budget: $75M · 🍅: 39% Twenty-eight years of nostalgia got Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman a first-place finish, but not the $40M tracking promised. It's a cult movie's sequel, and it opened like one. A B+ CinemaScore and a soft $16M overseas mean WB is going to need real legs to make the $75M back.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day WK 7 Sony/Marvel · $8.4M domestic weekend (-53%) · Domestic total: $935.2M · Global total: $2.45B · Budget: $225M The six-week run at No. 1 is over, but it should pass 'The Force Awakens' ($936.6M) any day now to become the highest-grossing movie ever domestically.
The Odyssey WK 9 Universal · $7.4M domestic weekend (-43%) · Domestic total: $600.5M · Global total: $1.68B · Budget: $250M Another week, another milestone: it's now Universal's biggest movie ever, passing 'Jurassic World.'
Runner NEW Angel Studios · $6.7M domestic weekend · 🍅: 71% Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson's buddy actioner earned the weekend's best CinemaScore (A-) while landing exactly where Ritchson's 'Ordinary Angels' did in 2024.
Coyote vs. Acme WK 3 Ketchup Entertainment · $6.2M domestic weekend (-45%) · Domestic total: $47.8M · Global total: $60.2M · Budget: $70M
Buddy WK 3 Roadside Attractions/Saban Films · $3.5M domestic weekend (-39%) · Domestic total: $21.3M
Insidious: Out of the Further WK 4 Sony/Blumhouse · $3.4M domestic weekend (-49%) · Domestic total: $60.5M · Global total: $155.2M · Budget: $18M
Hope NEW Neon · $3.3M domestic weekend · Global total: $41.6M · Budget: $46M · 🍅: 80% Na Hong-jin's alien invasion movie cost more than any Korean film in history, and Korea showed up for it. Stateside it's a niche play, not helped by the fact that its two recognizable stars (Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander) play the aliens and spend the whole movie buried under CGI.
The Uprising NEW Focus Features · $3.25M domestic weekend · 🍅: 51% Paul Greengrass (the 'Bourne' movies) made a gritty medieval revolt movie with Andrew Garfield, and it just didn't connect. Focus paid $12M for it, and a B- CinemaScore means word of mouth probably won't save it.
By Any Means WK 2 Paramount · $2.5M domestic weekend (-66%) · Domestic total: $13.5M · Budget: $30M

Up next: Zach Cregger ('Weapons,' 'Barbarian') takes a swing at 'Resident Evil' for Sony. Tracking says $35M, which would be the biggest opening the franchise has ever had.
TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
🇨🇦 Five days of TIFF and counting…

Toronto's in full swing. A few screening highlights from the weekend:
'I Play Rocky' (Amazon MGM, Nov 6), Peter Farrelly's movie about a broke Sylvester Stallone trying to get cast in 'Rocky,' was the crowd-pleaser. Huge ovation, and Anthony Ippolito, who plays Stallone, is picking up early Best Actor buzz.
Bassam Tariq's 'Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother' (also Amazon MGM). Yes, that's the actual title. Say it three times and Mahershala Ali appears with rave reviews. It's an action drama about religion, and after Ali and Tariq spent years stuck in Marvel's 'Blade' limbo, some are calling this the version they got to make on their own terms, at a fraction of the scale.
Neon's 'Fjord' landed a lot softer here than it did at Cannes, where it was one of the fest's biggest hits. Plenty of people in Toronto flat-out didn't like it, which is a real gap between the two crowds. Probably no big deal for its Oscar chances, since the Academy's voting body is very international these days, but still, interesting.
Also premiered, among many others: Chris Rock's 'Misty Green' (A24), Cynthia Erivo's 'Prima Facie' (Sony), Lauren Miller Rogen's 'Babies' (Roadside/Vertical) and Zack Snyder's 'The Last Photograph' (no distributor, and the early reviews are bad). And a lot of the Venice titles, like Netflix's 'Ink,' haven't hit Toronto yet.
Over at the market…
TIFF's first official market opened with roughly 6,000 delegates and 800+ buyers, but the dealmaking has been cautious so far. A few notable moves:
Vertical picked up 'Cliffhanger' (Lily James, Pierce Brosnan) for spring 2027. Fun fact: this was last year's biggest TIFF deal, an eight-figure buy by Row K, which then went under. Same movie, same fest, new buyer.
Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Focus signed 'River' director Josh Giuliano for his next movie, 'Occupant,' a day after his slasher debut played Midnight Madness. That's the same team that bought 'Obsession' here last year and rode it to $512M. No Midnight title has come close to that yet this year, and TIFF is actually re-screening 'Obsession' this week.
Elsewhere on the floor, AMC was pitching its new distribution label, Leawood Films, while Warner Bros. threw an official launch party for its specialty label, Clockwork, with Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy and their execs in tow.

WIDESHOT
🎬 ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!,’ Paramount exit, and AI…

📺 Jimmy Kimmel is back at the table with less leverage than ever. Kimmel wants to keep 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' going past the '26-27 season, and ABC is open to it, with conditions. His last renewal was a one-year extension instead of the usual three, and this time ABC reportedly wants about 20% shaved off its ~$100M budget (about what CBS was spending on 'Colbert' when it canceled the show). And then there's the politics: Kimmel's monologues have put ABC at odds with the Trump administration, which has been reviewing its broadcast licenses, and Disney is now suing the FCC over it. Meanwhile, late-night ad spending dropped to $209M in 2025 from $519.7M in 2017. Kimmel's deal is the latest data point in a tough climate for late night.
⚖️ A leaked report says a Paramount exit would cost California 58,000 jobs. Paramount commissioned the study from the L.A. Economic Development Corporation, and it leaked Saturday. On top of those jobs, it pegs the damage at up to $21B a year in lost output. That assumes the studio makes good on its threat to relocate to Georgia, Tennessee, or Texas if the 12-state suit against its Warner Bros. Discovery merger succeeds. The report landed just as a judge ordered both sides into two days of settlement talks in late October. Nobody's promising much, though. California AG Rob Bonta's office called it "standard course," and Paramount said it remains "open to working constructively with plaintiffs on a speedy resolution."
🤖 AI's biggest CEOs want to hit the brakes. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay Saturday saying the industry needs to slow down on making AI models smarter. He argues that self-improving models are moving faster than labs can keep them in check, and cites a recent case where OpenAI's models coordinated cyberattacks without any human involved. His fix is to put permanent outside evaluators inside every lab, which Anthropic is doing now. Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis all quickly agreed. Critics, President Trump among them, say easing off would only hand China the lead, and even Amodei admits that's the "toughest dilemma" his plan faces.
VENICE FILM FESTIVAL
🇮🇹 Venice handed out its awards Saturday night…

May el-Toukhy receives the Golden Lion for ‘Woman Unknown’ (Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images)
The 83rd Venice Film Festival wrapped Saturday night, and the Golden Lion went to May el-Toukhy's 'Woman Unknown,' a post-WWII Danish drama that also took Best Actress for Mathilde Arcel. It beat out presumed favorite 'Possible Love,' and it was the only film in competition directed solo by a woman, a stat jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal herself had criticized at the opening presser. She insisted the pick had nothing to do with that, then joked, "It's made by a woman, so, Golden Lion!" Some of the other awards:
Grand Jury Prize: 'Possible Love' (Lee Chang-dong), a consolation prize for one of the best-reviewed films of the fest.
Best Director: Ilya Khrzhanovsky for the three-plus-hour Soviet epic 'DAU,' which he dedicated to Ukraine.
Best Actor: John Malkovich, 'Wild Horse Nine' (edging out Robert Pattinson, who'd been in the running for 'Primetime').
Special Jury Prize: 'NAZA,' the Gaza doc from the 'No Other Land' team. Its premiere drew a 25-minute ovation, the longest in festival history, and it's also unsold in the US.
Full list of winners here. 👈
The bigger picture: with the studios sitting out and most of the marquee titles already sold before the fest, the Lido was more launchpad than marketplace this year. And under the Academy's new rules, 'Woman Unknown' is now automatically eligible for Best International Feature, the first to benefit since the rule change in May. Cue the Oscar campaign machinery firing up.
